“The Denver Art Museum on Monday announced belt-tightening measures as part of a midyear evaluation following the debut of the Frederic C. Hamilton building. The museum eliminated eight positions and accepted the resignations of 30 employees who accepted a voluntary buyout program offered nearly two weeks ago. The cuts represent 14 percent of the museum’s full-time employees, bringing the total to 230.”

Rochester Phil Closes Out 8-Year Drive
Upstate New York’s Rochester Philharmonic is finally closing the books on an 8-year, $10 million endowment drive designed to keep the ensemble fiscally solvent for the indefinite future. “The orchestra’s 2005-06 operating budget was $9 million.”

Gustavo Dudamel is only 26, and won’t yet be 30 when he takes over the music directorship of the LA Philharmonic in 2009. But the Phil has a long history with young conductors, and its collection of music directors has been quite a diverse one by orchestral standards, which seems somehow appropriate for the City of Angels. “Los Angeles and its environs are not one thing culturally — nor two, nor 20, nor even 200. The area is not the sum of its parts — it’s a kind of uber-multicultural metropolis.”
